William Powell Frith, RA

William Powell Frith (English, 1819–1909) was famous for his genre scenes of contemporary English life evocative of William Hogarth, executed with an impressive preciseness of technique. He entered the Royal Academy school in 1837, and exhibited his first picture there in 1840, Malvolio Before the Countess Olivia. He was elected associate of the Royal Academy in 1845 and a member in 1852. He swiftly gained acclaim with Queen Victoria purchasing his first contemporary scene of domestic life, Ramsgate Sands.
