Bibliothèque of Madeleine Castaing II, Lèves, France

2020

A five-bedroom, pale blue-and-turquoise country house located an hour and a half southwest of Paris, Maison de Lèves served as a lifelong laboratory for France’s maîtresse of interiors, Madeleine Castaing (1894-1992). In it, she developed the effortless theatricality of le style Castaing, with many of the hallmarks seen here: robin’s egg blue, neoclassical furniture, and wall-to-wall leopard-spot carpeting. Castaing, who spent decades nurturing artists like Soutine, famously drew upon the fevered descriptions of rooms in the works of Proust, Zola, and Balzac.
